MYSORE: The newly formed Chamalapura Ushna Vidyut Sthavara Virodhi Horata Samanvaya Samithi, a joint forum of various organisations opposing the proposed 1000-MW coal-fired thermal power plant at Chamalapura village, will be holding a massive rally on Wednesday.

According to samithi convener Muddukrishna, the rally has been organised to send a strong message to the Government that there is stron opposition to the setting up of the plant.

Schoolchildren will inaugurate the rally. Noted personalities, including Jnanpith Award-winner U.R. Ananthamurthy; writer Devanuru Mahadeva; the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah; the former Union Minister V. Srinivas Prasad; scion of the royal family Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar; K.S. Puttannaiah of the KRRS; State CPI secretary Siddanagowda Patil; C.H. Vijayashankar and Shivanna, MPs; Vatal Nagaraj, P.G.R. Sindhia, H.C. Mahadevappa and H. Vishwanath, MLAs; Gauri Lankesh; Prasanna; K.L. Ashok; Kalkuli Vittal Hegde; and freedom fighter Seetharam Iyengar will be participating in the rally.

Speaking to presspersons on Monday, H. Govindaiah said there was a need to send a strong message to those in power. He sought to know why the Government had revived the proposal, which was dropped a decade ago after it was found to be not feasible. Detailing the ill-effects of thermal plant, convener of Mysore Amateur Naturalists’ Manu said that the plant would emit 6,000 tonnes of fly ash, 180 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 50 tonnes of nitrous oxide particles into the atmosphere. The pollution would affect the people of Mandya, Chamarajanagar and Kodagu districts as well. He appealed to people of Mysore to participate in the public rally to show their solidarity for the cause. Activists of the Rajya Dravida Maha Sabha here took out a procession from Lansdowne Building to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and handed over a memorandum urging the Government to drop the proposed project.
