BANGALORE: The Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Cyriac Joseph, on Thursday remarked in jest that while even beggars had a colony in Bangalore, judges did not.

He further remarked that he had been asking the Government for land for construction of judges quarters but to no avail. The Chief Justice was reacting to a PIL by two residents of Bangalore challenging the decision to lease for commercial activity 100 acres of land belonging to the Beggars Colony. They said a notification was issued on June 17, 2007 by the Karnataka Land Army calling for tenders for construction of commercial complex on land belonging to the Beggars Colony at Magadi Road.

The Division Bench directed the State government advocate to ascertain facts and report back to the court.
