1.95 million tonnes of freight traffic
Marketing efforts make it possible
MANGALORE: New Mangalore Port has during this financial year handled 14.14 million tonnes of traffic, recording an overall increase of 15.85 per cent compared to last year. Container traffic has shown a 32 per cent increase due to marketing efforts and also additions to infrastructure such as purchase of reach stacker, extension and hardening of container stack yard and increasing reefer plug points.
A press release from New Mangalore Port Trust Chairman P. Tamilvanan here on Friday said that the port handled 1.95 million tonnes of freight traffic as against 0.8 million tonnes last year, an increase of 124 per cent.
To synchronise with the commissioning of Hassan-Mangalore rail line in May 2006, the port has made all-out efforts to renovate all existing five rail lines, constructed platforms and installed high-mast lights to enable round-the-clock operations.
Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited has added four more lines in its endeavour to have a dedicated freight corridor within the port, he said. All these activities have paved the way for smooth passage of railway traffic.
