DHARWAD: A procession by schoolchildren here on Thursday marked the conclusion of the yearlong programmes at the district level organised as part of the birth centenary celebrations of revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and All India Mahila Samskrutika Sanghatane (AIMSS) had jointly organised the programme.

Students of as many as 25 schools and colleges in the district participated in the procession, which passed through Subhash Road, KCC Bank Circle and Tikare Road before concluding at Kadapa Maidan where a valedictory ceremony was organised. The students held placards and portraits of Bhagat Singh and raised slogans praising the freedom fighter.

Addressing a gathering, AIDSO State unit president M.N. Sriram explained the objectives behind organising programmes throughout the year for creating awareness on the ideology and views of the revolutionary leader.

He recalled the contributions of Bhagat Singh to the Indian freedom movement and spoke about various stages of his life.

Mr. Sriram said that changing the name of Hindustan Republican Army to Hindustan Socialist Republican Association showed the revolutionary leader’s leaning towards socialism.

Bhagat Singh wanted freedom which ensured power to the working class and not to the capitalists, and till the end of his life he worked for the cause, he said.

Ramanjanappa Aldalli, State unit secretary of AIDYO, spoke about Bhagat Singh’s ideology. Office-bearers of the three organisations such as H.G. Desai, Gangadhar Badiger, Manjojkumar Guddi, Mallu Huded and Prabhavati Googal were among those present.
