SHIMOGA: Students and staff of Vasavi School in Shimoga celebrated the 60th Independence Day on Wednesday with a boating trip along the Tunga. They set off from the new bridge at Seegehatti in four boats and rowed up to the mantap, covering a distance of 2 km. Each boat carried two students and two staff members.

Manjunath, Vadiraj, Mohankrishna and A.N. Vijayendra, all members of the Adventurers Club, helped navigate the boats.

The occupants of the boats, who were visibly excited, raised slogans on national integrity and sang patriotic songs all along the journey. They set out around 4.30 p.m. and reached the mantap around 6.30 pm.

A large gathering of students, teachers and residents had gathered to receive them. Cultural programmes were presented by the students on the riverbank.

Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa inaugurated the programme.
