Chitradurga: Hundreds of employees of the City Municipal Council were arrested rule for staging a “rasta roko” on National Highway 4 near Challakere tollgate here on Tuesday.

The dharna was part of the State-wide agitation launched by the employees against the Government’s alleged discrimination in giving financial benefits to the employees.

Over 300 employees who staged “rasta roko”, shouted slogans against the State Government demanding their inclusion in the fifth Pay Commission.

Municipal Employees’ Association district unit president H. Mahantesh urged the Government to meet their justifiable demands. “We never wanted to resort to such steps which causes inconvenience to public, but to press for our demands, we were forced to choose this way,” he said.

The association was demanding the regularisation of daily wage workers of the municipality.

All the protesters, who were arrested, were later released after booking the case with the Rural Police.

Soon after the release, the protesters joined the dharna in the CMC offices. Mr. Mahantesh said the employees would stage night-long dharna on Tuesday.

“We want the Government to realise our problems,” he said and added that a similar agitation would be held at taluk level.
