HUBLI: The KPTCL Vidyut Vitarana Guttige Karmikara Sangha will start an indefinite relay fast from July 16 in protest against discontinuing the services of contract workers in Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) and electricity supply companies. State secretary of the sangha K. Somashekhar told presspersons here on Tuesday that resuming the protest had become inevitable as the promises made after the previous protest were yet to be fulfilled.

Mr. Somashekhar said that during the previous protest, the protesters were assured by the State Government that it would consider their demands after the Chamundeshwari byelection. However, even after Ullal byelection there was no signs of the demands of the contract workers being addressed, he said and added that the managing director of KPTCL had ruled out agreeing to their demands saying that the policy would not permit such things.

The sangha’s demands include regularisation of services of contract labourers and changes in the service rules if required and reappointment of the workers whose services had been discontinued.
