Governments should support the effort: Rajasekharan
Yakshagana must remain in traditional form
Commercial shows generate Rs 6 crore turnover, a year
MANGALORE: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan on Sunday suggested Universities in the State to set up study chairs for conducting research on Yakshagana and promote this art form.
He was addressing a gathering after presenting “Yaksha Kalanidhi” award instituted by Delhi-based Academy of Tenku Thittu Yakshagana (ATTY) to Peruvodi Narayana Bhat.
Mr. Rajasekharan said there was a need to conduct more research on Yakshagana.
The State and Union Governments should extend support to Universities in this regard.
Indian youth were getting attracted by pop and other forms of western music. Amid this threat, there is a need to protect and nurture native culture and art forms, he said.
Yakshagana, by protecting its own tradition, has contributed to spread literacy, health, female foeticide and environmental protection.
Purushotham Bilimale, director, American Institute of Indian Studies, Delhi, who inaugurated a website on Yakshagana maintained by Vidya Kolyur, a trustee of ATTY, said there was a need to set up chapters of art forms of Karnataka in Delhi. The State Government or other institutes should take the initiative to set up such chapters in Delhi, he said.
“Yakshagana” commercial shows generate a turnover of Rs. Six crore through approximately 12,000 shows a year, he said.Mr. Bhat who received the award said he had served the art form for 49 years.
Saravu Krishna Bhat, general secretary, Delhi Karnataka Sangha, and a trustee of ATTY said the ATTY had created a 20-hour documentation on Yakshagana. Through “yaksha manjusha”, a team of Yakshagana artistes,it had presented 72 programmes in Hindi in the last two years in the country, he said. Mr. Bhat criticised the adaptation of cinema themes to Yakshagana and presentation of the art form in cinema style. “Let such experiments be named differently,” he said.Yakshagana should be presented in its traditional form only, he said.
Rashtriya Tenkana Yakshotsava – 2007 of “yaksha manjusha” team was inaugurated on the occasion.The team members staged “Panchavati” episode in Hindi.
