Bangalore: Sarojini Kalbagh (19), an acid attack victim from Bijapur, on Sunday died of burns that she suffered last month. She was undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital here.
The police said Sarojini had sustained 80 per cent burns. The accused, Devanand, who claimed to be in love with her, is alleged to have thrown acid on Sarojini when she was out taking a walk with her sister in Bijapur on May 15. A case was filed with the Bijapur Police Station.
On Sunday, Pramila Nesargi, chairperson of State Women’s Commission, visited the victim’s family. Speaking to The Hindu, Ms. Nesargi said that the commission had given Rs. 10,000 as compensation to the family. She also said that there was no provision in the draft rehabilitation package for acid attack victims. “There is a provision which says that the victims will get Rs. 50,000 for corrective surgeries. However, there is no provision that specifies the amount which a acid attack victim will get if she dies,” she said.
Rupa (22), a housewife, hanged herself to death at her house in Byrasandra, coming under the Talaghattapura Police Station limits, on Saturday. The police said that Rupa was married to Manjunath, a truck driver, two years ago. A case of dowry harassment has been filed. The police have arrested Manjunath in this connection.
Attempt to murder
Three cases of attempt to murder have been registered in the city since Saturday.
A gang of persons attacked Anil Varghese, a painter and financier, at Doddanakundi coming under HAL Police Station limits, on Saturday. The police said that Anil and his friend were out walking at around 9.30 p.m. when the three-man gang attacked him with knives. They reportedly stabbed him several times. Anil is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. A case has been registered.
In another case, a few persons tried to murder a person who was sleeping on the footpath on 9th Main, K.P. Agrahara, on Saturday. The victim has been identified as Mohan alias Kutti alias Mosale (28), a bookbinder. The assailants tried to smash his head with a stone, the police said. He has been admitted to NIMHANS, where he is being treated for severe head injuries, the police added. A group of four persons on Saturday entered Narayanappa’s house in Subramanyapura and assaulted him. The Channammanakere Achkut police said that Narayanappa (50), who was under the influence of alcohol, entered a flower shop and created a ruckus. Enraged with his act, the flower shop owner and a few others went to Narayanappa’s house and assaulted him with stones. A case has been registered.
A house in Ejipura was looted on Saturday. According to a complaint filed by Aruna, a resident of Ejipura, a gang of persons gained entry to her house by breaking open the lock. They reportedly took away a laptop and gold ornaments valued at Rs. 1.5 lakh from her house. The police said that Aruna had gone to her relative’s house to attend a marriage party. She returned at around 10 p.m. to find that her house had been broken into.
A 12-year-old boy was killed in an accident on Banawara Main Road on Saturday. The police gave the name of the dead as Madhu, student at Chikkabanawara Government Primary School.
