The police allegedly roughed up and abused a man whose vehicle collided with that of an SI

MYSORE: Tension sparked off in Udayagiri as a mob went on the rampage and targeted the police for their "high-handedness" here on Sunday.

The incident took place late in the evening when the Udayagiri Sub-inspector Parashivamurthy who was riding a two-wheeler was negotiating a curve in front of the police station.

A vehicle driven by Ayub Khan, which was coming in the opposite direction, collided with the two-wheeler. The SI suffered minor injuries.

A constable on duty who witnessed the accident allegedly roughed up Ayub Khan and abused him. This led to a backlash from people who had by then gathered at the spot. They blocked the road and shouted slogans against the police. The police had a tough time controlling the mob that was seething in anger against the alleged high-handedness of the police.

People threw stones at the station and destroyed the windowpanes. A police jeep and a tempo too fell victim to the wrath of the mob which refused to disperse and demanded the immediate release of five persons who were held by the police.

The police relented when there was no sign of the mob dispersing despite plea by senior officials. Additional forces were rushed to the Udayagiri police station to prevent any further escalation of violence.

Tension continued although one unit of City Armed Reserve and Karnataka State Reserve Police was deployed.
