Chitradurga: R. Krishnamurthy of the Janata Dal (Secular) won the byelection to Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat from Sirigere by a margin of 1,117 votes.

He polled 5,169 votes while S. Rudrachari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got 4,052 votes. Kumargowda of the Congress finished third with 3,774 votes.

Three independent candidates, J. Rajashekharappa, S. G. Basavarajappa and S. Munawar, were in the fray. The byelection was caused by the death of H. Venkatesh of the JD(S).

The JD(S) and the BJP had made the byelection a prestige issue. The polling was held on Sunday and the counting took place on Monday amid tight security.

Soon after the second round of counting, the JD(S) supporters began the celebrations by bursting crackers and shouting slogans. Hundreds of people had gathered near the counting centre. Soon after the declaration of the result, the JD(S) workers went delirious beating drums and sprinkled gulal on one another.

MLC B.T. Chennabasappa, Bharamasagar MLA H. Anjaneya and Basavaraj were present. The party workers took out a victory procession .
