President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will honour panchayat heads
Seven panchayats are from Madikeri and five are from Somwarpet They will get an award of Rs. 38 lakh
Madikeri: As many as 12 gram panchayats in Kodagu district have been selected for the Nirmala Gram Puraskar under the Total Sanitation Programme (TSP). They have bagged a total of Rs. 38 lakh as award.
They were chosen from the 25 selected gram panchayats in the district, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat K. Sundar Naik said here on Saturday. Presidents of these panchayats will receive the honour from President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in New Delhi on May 4. Of the winning panchayats, seven are from Madikeri taluk and five from Somwarpet taluk.
Those receiving the award in Madikeri taluk are: Makkandur, Kalakeri-Nidugane and Kadagadal panchayats (Rs. 2 lakh each) and Maragodu, Hakathur, Bettageri and Ballamavati panchayats (Rs. 4 lakh each). Panchayats in Somwarpet taluk were: Kedakkal and Nanjarayapatna (Rs. 2 lakh each) and Belur, Sunticoppa and Nellihudikeri (Rs. 4 lakh each), Mr. Naik said at a meeting of the presidents of all 12 panchayat here at the Old Assembly Hall.
Under the puraskar, a panchayat with a population of 1,000 will get a cash award of Rs. 50,000, those with population between 1,000 and 2,000 Rs. 1 lakh, those with population between 2,000 and 5,000 Rs. 2 lakh, panchayats with population between 5,000 and 10,000 Rs. 4 lakh and those with population above 10,000 will get Rs. 5 lakh. Panchayat presidents and two resource persons, D.D. Pemmaiah and H.S. Vasudev, and District Information officer Vinod Chandra as the guest, will leave for New Delhi on May 2. Panchayats presidents Shambhaiah (Kadagadal), Dean Bopanna (of Kalakeri-Nidugane), N. Umesh (Ballamavati), Revati (Makkandur), B.U. Janaki (Maragodu), H.B. Savitri (Hakathur), K. Cariappa (Bettageri), Sebastien (Sunticoppa), K.A. Yakub (Belur), Balakrishna Rai (Kedakkal), Hakim (Nellihudikeri) and M.M. Lokanath (Nanjarayapatna) were present.
