BANGALORE: Undertrials in the Central Prison henceforth need not wait for the permission of the jurisdictional court to speak to their loved ones over telephone. They can now make use of the 10 telephone booths in the prison and call once a week, but only for five minutes.

The booths were opened by Home Minister M.P. Prakash on Monday.

To use the facility, each inmate has to buy a coupon for Rs. 100.

The prison authorities will record all telephone conversations and if anyone is found misusing the facility, access will be closed to them.

"Till now the inmates were being taken to a booth outside under police escort where there was every chance they would try to escape," Deputy Inspector-General of Police B.S. Abbai said.
