KRV activists were demanding renaming of the Jindal steel plant

BELLARY: The movement of vehicles on Gooty-Ankola National Highway 63 was affected for some time between Bellary and Toranagal following a "rasta roko" staged by activists of the Bellary district unit of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, who were demanding that the Jindal steel plant be renamed as the Vijayanagar steel plant.

The Jindal group, which set up the multi-crore mega steel plant, earlier named it as Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Limited. Later, the name was changed to Jindal South West Steel Limited, which has been opposed by the vedike.

The vedike activists squatted on the road near the Sandur Cross for about an hour, shouting slogans against the alleged "anti-Kannada stand" of the Jindal group. They later removed the boards of the plant that were in English.

The vedike, in a memorandum submitted to the Assistant Commissioner, demanded that Kannadigas be given priority in appointments and that steps be taken to implement the Sarojini Mahishi Committee report on giving jobs to the locals. It also demanded that the Jindal group be told to display boards in Kannada on and around its plant premises.

Activists from Bellary, Sandur, Moka, Mustigatti, Gadiganur, Yettinabudihal, Hospet, Siruguppa and Sangankallu participated.
