BANGALORE: Muslims celebrated Id-Milad with pomp and fervour in the city on Monday. A large number of people gathered at the YMCA grounds and at Idgah-e-Khuddus Sahib to offer prayers on the day that marks the beginning of a host of festivities under the Islamic calendar.

People from Shivajinagar, Tannery Road, Kalasipalyam and other parts took out processions. Converging at Hudson Circle, they moved to the YMCA grounds on Nrupatunga Road.

As curious onlookers lined the path, models of chariots rolled along the road.

Fire-eaters let out flames while some of the merry makers danced and others flourished long sticks and swords.

A few were even dressed as Tipu Sultan.

At Idgah-e-Khuddus Sahib on Millers Road, the devout assembled at the Jalsah (function).

Shantaveera Mahaswami participated in the function.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who was expected to participate in the Jalsah, could not make it.

At the Jalsah, people read verses from Quran and recited "Naath" all in praise of Prophet Mohammed.

Men and women offered prayers at 7 p.m. with a person reciting a verse from the Quran.

Traffic affected

The processions affected movement of traffic on J.C. Road, N.R. Road, Kempegowda Road, Seshadri Road, Mission Road, Lalbagh Road, Hosur Road, Kasturba Road, Nrupatunga Road, Cubbon Road, Palace Road and Goods Shed Road. Traffic jams caused hardship to Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus commuters. BMTC buses took time as drivers had to take a detour from crowded junctions to reach the destinations. At several places, passengers got off the buses and walked towards their destinations.
