  • `Fly ash produced will affect the environment'
  • `Study of carrying capacity of districts needed'

UDUPI: Vice-president of Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samithi Vijaykumar Hegde said on Monday that a coal-based thermal power project was not suited to the coastal region.

    Likely problems

Mr. Hegde told presspersons here that despite claims that a mechanism would be put in place for scientific disposal of the fly ash, the ash would affect the environment and could also reduce visibility at the airport at Bajpe.

He alleged that the Nagarjuna Company did not have permission to set up the thermal power plant.

He said that if transmission and distribution losses were reduced, the State would not experience any power shortage.

    Study

A study of the "carrying capacity" of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada was essential before establishing mega industries here, Mr. Hegde said.
