Pistol snatched from police recovered
Belgaum: The Chikkodi and Kudachi police on Wednesday arrested seven members of a gang involved in several murder, dacoity and ransom cases.
The names of the arrested have been given as Gangappa alias Mudkappa Mahadev Hullolli (23), Nagaraj Maruti Hunshyal (21), Laxman Maruti Hunshyal (23), Srishail Laxman Hosatti (24) all from N. Khandal, Babu Somanna Odeyar (36), Sadashiv Siddappa Dange (24) and Muttappa Siddappa Dange (26) all from Itnal village. The police have recovered Rs. 1,11,500, a jeep, 14 motorcycles, three cellphones and gold and silver ornaments from the accused. A 9 mm pistol and eight bullets, which the accused had snatched from the police, have been recovered.
The value of the goods seized has been estimated at Rs. 11,86,300. The accused were involved in seven murder, four dacoity and three ransom cases, according to the police.
A press release issued by Superintendent of Police Sonia Narang here on Thursday said that the Kudachi police led by Police Sub-Inspector (Crime) Anand M. Vaghmode were investigating a case of robbery reported from Kappalguddi village in Kudachi police station limits of Raibag taluk on October 16. Shivamurthy Siddalingaiah Sanjuwadmath and Mahaling Mahadev Julpi, businessmen from Mahalingpur village, were robbed of Rs. 1.12 lakh when they were returning home on a motorcycle.
On a tip off, Mr. Vaghmode and his team rushed to Itnal village on Tuesday in search of suspects Basappa Hullolli and Laxman Shivappa Bang. On reaching the farmhouse of the two suspects, the team members were surrounded by about 40 people who beat them up and snatched a gold chain, 9 mm pistol and a cellphone. The team members were locked up in the farmhouse. Circle Inspector of Police of Raibag G.B. Goudar along with some policemen rushed to the village after the incident. But they were also overpowered. The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Chikkodi, who rushed to the spot with additional forces, freed the PSI and his staff who were locked up.
The police managed to arrest 17 persons, while the main accused Sadashiv Siddappa Dange and others managed to escape. The police have registered two cases against Siddappa and 31 others in connection with the incident.
