Bangalore: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president R.V. Deshpande on Monday cautioned Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa against levying taxes on products such as petrol and diesel for funding the relief works in flood-ravaged north Karnataka.

He was speaking to presspersons after flagging off six loads containing relief material such as rice, bedsheets, blankets, saris, dhotis, utensils, mosquito coils, kerosene and plates for the people in Navalgund, Bagaklot, Raichur, Badami and Manvi Assembly constituencies.

Mr. Deshpande said that any taxation measure without proper application of mind would have a cascading effect on the poor people. The worth of the relief materials, the KPCC said, was more than Rs. 1 crore.

The materials were organised by Ramalinga Reddy and B. Prasanna Kumar, MLAs, and youth Congress workers. K.J. George, MLA, presented a cheque for Rs.10.51 lakh to Mr. Deshpande for utilising the same for relief work.
