Panaji: “There are 400 plus electronic channels in the country today but no one looks at the documentaries as a viable proposition, that is the sorry state of affairs”, rued Janu Barua, president of the Indian Documentary Producers’ Association (IDPA), while commenting on the economics of the documentary and short film production in the country.

Addressing presspersons on the sidelines of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here on Thursday, vice-president of the IDPA Ramesh Tekwani earlier said nearly 50,000 documentaries are produced in the country but the country lacks a culture of commissioning documentaries. As options for marketing of documentary films, the IDPA is continuing its efforts with the film distributors to persuade them to revive the good old practice of screening of documentaries ahead of feature films in the cinema houses.
