BANGALORE: Transport Minister R. Ashok has promised to reserve parking space exclusively for people with disabilities across the city and instructed officials to give it priority.

Speaking at “Chaitanya — An Attempt to Bring New Spirit in the Disabled”, organised by Landmark Education, a voluntary organisation at Hosakerehalli here earlier in the week, he said he had given oral instructions to the officials concerned. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would initiate the process soon.

Mr. Ashok was responding to a proposal by social activists Chetana Bhat and Rachana Somashekar to create parking space for people with disabilities at shopping complexes, malls, hospitals and banks, besides commercial hubs such as Majestic and Mahatma Gandhi Road.

The proposal to create exclusive parking space for people with disabilities would be implemented in areas identified by the voluntary organisation, and a pilot project would take off early 2010.

Ms. Bhat said that the exclusive facility was available only on Commercial Street and Brigade Road and in the lots of some companies.
