University of Mysore is hosting the festival after two decades
MYSORE: About 1,500 students representing 75 universities from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry will arrive here on Sunday to participate in the 25th South Zone Inter-University Youth Festival called Silver Unifest-2009, which begins at the Manasagangotri campus of the University of Mysore on Monday.
The five-day cultural festival, which the University of Mysore is hosting after a gap of 20 years, is organised by the university in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, and the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor V.G. Talawar said that Governor H.R. Bhardwaj would inaugurate the festival on November 23. Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavali, MLAs V. Sreenivasa Prasad, H.S. Shankaralinge Gowda and Arjuna awardee Reeth Abraham would be present.
He said that 28 competitions in music, dance, literature, theatre and fine arts were scheduled across five days. Prior to the inauguration, at 2.30 p.m. a procession of the participants would be flagged off by Mayor Purushottam from the Fire Brigade office in Saraswathipuram to the Open Air Theatre.
The valedictory function would be held on November 27 at the Open Air Theatre at 10 a.m.
The events will be organised in eight venues: the Open Air Theatre, the Fine Arts College Auditorium, the E.M.M.R.C Auditorium, the Department of Studies in the Physics auditorium, the Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar auditorium, the Departments of Studies at the Statistics Seminar Hall, the Commerce Hall and the Senate Hall.
Prof. Talawar said that the cultural programmes were open to students and the public at the Open Air Theatre at 6.30 p.m. on November 24, 25 and 26.
He said eight committees had been constituted for organising the festival and the university, with contribution of the Association of Indian Universities, would spend Rs. 30 lakh on the festival. The association had promised Rs. 10 lakh and has released Rs. 6 lakh.
