Manipal: A five-member team of students from Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) have won the prestigious “GE Edison Innovation Challenge”.

A press release issued by Manipal University here on Tuesday stated that the team called “Fastrack Developers” comprised Vasuki Prasad (team leader), Rupan Sarkar, Pranab Purkayastha, Rahul Sharma and Gaurav Kumar Barman, with Radhakrishna S. Aithal, professor at MIT as their mentor.

They presented a reliable, rugged working model (approved and certified by the Indian Railway Authorities) of a communication system to record and display maximum information of the train passing through a station without stopping and to determine the characteristics of the rolling stock (hot axle detection, derailment possibility etc.) in a cost-effective manner.

After a rigorous evaluation process, the team qualified for the third and final round, along with the team from IIT Kharagpur.

In the finals held on November 7 at Bangalore, the team from MIT was adjudged the winner of the challenge. They were given a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh along with a rolling trophy, the release added.
