Bangalore: Paul Daniel Dinakaran Premkumar was on Friday sworn-in Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court by Governor Rameshwar Thakur at a function organised at the Glass House of Raj Bhavan here.

Mr. Dinakaran, Judge of the Madras High Court, was elevated to the post of Chief Justice and posted to the Karnataka High Court.

He was administered the oath of office in the presence of the Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and a galaxy of judges and senior lawyers of the High Courts, including a large contingent of them from Tamil Nadu.

Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao read the Presidential communiqué appointing Mr. Dinakaran as new Chief Justice. Chairman of the Legislative Council Veeranna Mathikatti, Lokayukta N. Santhosh Hegde, the former Judge of the Supreme Court Shivraj Patil, MLA from Tamil Nadu B. Ranganathan, MLC V.R.Venkatesh, president of the Bangalore Bar Association D.L. Jagadish, President of the High Court Circuit Bench Bar Association, Hubli, B.D. Hiremath and senior bureaucrats of the State Government were present.

Judges of the Madras High Court K. Raviraja Pandyan, D. Murugeshan, K.N. Basha, M. Raghupathi, K. Venkataraman, and N. Kannadasan (Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Consumers Forum, Chennai), and K. Elango (Chairman, Central Administrative Tribunal, Chennai) greeted Mr. Dinakaran on the occasion. Masilamani, Advocate-General of Tamil Nadu; R. Ravindran, Additional Solicitor-General, Southern states; R. Balasubramanian, retired judge of the Madras High Court; N.R. Chandran and R. Viduthalai, former Advocates-General of Tamil Nadu; Raja Elango, Tamil Nadu State Public Prosecutor; R. Shanmuga Sudaram, senior advocate; N.R. Elango, Additional Public Prosecutor; Paul Noble Devakumar, Tamil Nadu Government advocate on the criminal side, and R. Gandhi, President, Madras Bar Association, were present.

Mr. Dinakaran, accompanied by his wife and daughter, went round exchanging pleasantries with the dignitaries and introduced them to Mr. Thakur and Mr. Yeddyurappa.

Speaking to The Hindu, the new Chief Justice said that he would ensure that each and every citizen of the State was happy during his tenure as Chief Justice of the High Court.

Felicitated

The Karnataka State Bar Council felicitated Mr. Dinakarn on taking over as Chief Justice on the High Court premises. Council president Shiva Kumar welcomed Mr. Dinakaran.

Mr. Dinakaran took charge from the senior-most High Court judge and Acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Deepak Verma. High Court judges, the Advocate-General, senior advocates, presiding officers of the lower judiciary, High Court staff and advocates were present on the occasion.
