Sangha threatens to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha

MYSORE: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) here on Friday cautioned the Government that it would lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha if the minimum price for sugarcane was not fixed before August 15. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, President of KRRS K.S. Puttanniah said that the Government had to take the farmers’ agitation seriously and address their problems on a priority basis. “Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has a commitment to solve the problems of farmers, as he took oath in their name,” he said. He added that sugarcane growers had been facing problems for the last few years and the production of cane had come down by 50 per cent. Despite increase in the price of sugar and molasses, factory managements were not prepared to share their profits. It was the responsibility of the Government to persuade the factory managements to pay at least Rs. 1,545 a tonne as minimum price for sugarcane, he added. He also regretted that Ambika Sugars had closed down their factory.
