BANGALORE: The Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Wednesday was witness to an interesting debate on the pros and cons of conducting a “homa” to propitiate the rain gods — particularly whether it will help in reviving the southwest monsoon, which has beenweak.
. It all started when the former Energy Minister H.D. Revanna (Janata Dal-Secular), who has a penchant for conducting “homas,” suggested to Power Minister K.S. Eshwarappa to imitate his religious faith and thus find a solution to the serious power shortage.
Even before Mr. Revanna could complete his suggestion, Mr. Eshwarappa reacted that Mr. Revanna had conducted a “homa” detrimental to the interests of the State. In other words, the southwest monsoon has remained dormant over Karnataka thanks to the “homa.”
BJP member C.T. Ravi, quick to be on his feet, charged Mr. Revanna with conducting witchcraft (“mata”) and that was the reason the State facing a deficit rainfall.
It was another way for Mr. Ravi to snub Mr. Revanna who had sometime ago charged the BJP leadership with indulging in witchcraft.
Speaker Jagadish Shettar , who was keen on preventing any wastage of time, sarcastically suggested to the Government to heed the advice of Mr. Revanna.
