BJP bags five of the seven seats in Shimoga district
SHIMOGA: Five of the seven candidates of the BJP have been elected from Shimoga district.
The Congress could win only two seats, while the Janata Dal (S) suffered defeat in all the constituencies of the district.
The focus was on the Shikaripur constituency, where the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa defeated the former Chief Minister and Shimoga MP S. Bangarappa of the Samajawadi Party by a margin of 45,000 votes.
While Mr. Yeddyurappa polled 83,176 votes, Mr. Bangarappa secured 37,420. It is the highest lead by a winning candidate in the Assembly elections held in the district this time.
Mr. Bangarappa’s two sons were also defeated in the Sorab constituency.
This is considered as a major set back to Mr. Bangarappa, who has been in centre stage of politics in the district ever since his first victory in the Assembly elections in 1967 from the Sorab constituency.
The former Minister S. Kumar Bangarappa of the Congress and his brother Madhu Bangarappa of the Samajwadi Party were defeated by the former MLA Haratalu Halappa of the BJP.
The BJP’s victory in the Shikaripur and Shimoga Urban constituencies was expected. However, its impressive performance in the Sagar constituency, where Beluru Gopalakrishna defeated senior Congress leader Kagodu Thimmappa, and in the Shimoga Rural (Reserved) constituency, where K.G. Kumaraswamy defeated the former MLA Karianna of the Congress by a margin of 25,000, was a surprise to many.
The former Minister K.S. Eshwarappa defeated Ismail Khan of the Congress by a margin of 32,324 votes in the Shimoga Urban constituency. He secured 58,982 votes.
The only disappointing result for the BJP was in the Tirthahalli constituency, where Araga Jnanendra lost to his traditional Congress rival Kimmane Rathnakar by a margin of 3,800 votes.
In the Bhadravati constituency, Congress candidate B.K. Sangameshwar defeated his nearest rival M.J. Appaji Gowda of the Janata Dal (S) by a slender margin of 487 votes.
The former Shimoga MP Ayanur Manjunath of the BJP candidate secured the third place.
