RAMANAGARA: Even as Congress candidate Mamata Nichani undertook hectic campaigning in Ramanagara, the resentment against her candidature among the local Congress leaders became public on Thursday, which marked the last day of election campaign.
Congress leader and former MLA for Ramanagara C.M. Lingappa termed the fielding of Ms. Nichani as “the most foolish decision.”
Mr. Lingappa, who withdrew his nomination papers after the Congress gave the B form to Ms. Nichani, told The Hindu that “the rank and file of the Congress in Ramanagara will not accept an outsider as its candidate.”
Mr. Lingappa alleged that there was no proper response from people to Ms. Nichani’s candidature. At the same time, he made it clear that he was actively working for the party candidate by undertaking campaigns.
However, Ms. Nichani said that the response from people was more than expected. She undertook a brisk padayatra in several areas of Ramanagara, especially the Muslim-dominated areas on Thursday also. The party also organised public meetings in different areas of Ramanagara. Party leaders, including M. Mallikarjun Kharge and N. Dharam Singh addressed the public meetings. Leaders of Janata Dal (S), Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party undertook quick padayatras and processions in Ramanagara on the last day of campaigning. While Ms. Nichani sweated it out through padayatra, BJP candidate Rudresh took out a procession in different streets of Ramanagara and the nearby villages in an open jeep.
