Consumer seeks legal action

against DKMUL

MANGALORE: A milk consumer in the city has found a foreign body inside a half-litre milk sachet of Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd., (DKMUL). M. Abul Hameed of old Bunder area claims the object is a cockroach.

But Kaup Diwakar Shetty, president, DKMUL, said that since Mr. Hameed had not handed over it to DKMUL personnel nor had he opened the sachet, it was difficult to identify the foreign body.

When contacted, S.S. Khazi, the advocate for Mr. Hameed, said that the sachet was kept in the freezer of the refrigerator at Mr. Hameed’s house. “I have seen it and it is a cockroach,” he said.

Mr. Hameed said in his complaint with the police said that the milk was purchased from a parlour of DKMUL at Rao and Rao Circle on Mission Street at about 8 p.m. on January 12.

Two officials from DKMUL, who turned up at his residence, allegedly tried to snatch away the sachet by stating that they would replace it with another and promising some compensation. But he did not hand over the sachet to them, he said.

Mr. Hameed showed the sachet in the refrigerator and the object in it to this correspondent.

The sachet bears, “MMPO Reg. 82/R MMPO /93”, on it. The date of packing, in red ink, reads “January 12”.

Mr. Hameed said the sachet was shown to Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao on January 19.

Mr. Rao said: “I have advised the DKMUL to take immediate action.”

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, Kaup Diwakar Shetty, president, DKMUL, has appealed to the consumers that they should not be misled by reports on the foreign body in milk sachet.

“The packing is done with sophisticated technology and there was no chance for percolation of any foreign body into the sachet,” he said.
