The farmers have discarded bags of tomato in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office

DAVANGERE: Farmers, who had grown tomato this season, discarded bags of tomato in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday demanding support price for their crop.

The farmers said that they had to sell tomato for a paltry price of 80 paise a kg, and this would not even meet the transportation cost of their crop.

They said that they had grown the tomato incurring huge expenditure thinking that they would get good returns from the crop. Since tomato prices had come down considerably, the district administration should come to the rescue of the farmers and give them the support price, the farmers demanded. Large number of farmers from Obenahalli, Nichapura and Maykonda and other villages took part in the agitation. Later, the cattle were seen eating the discarded tomatoes.
