There were 45 teams in the procession led by an elephant

UJIRE (DAKSHINA KANNADA): A two-hour colourful procession stole the show prior to the inauguration of the four-day Vishwa Tulu Sammelan here on Thursday.

The procession, which started from Sri Janardhana Swamy temple, passed through the thoroughfares before reaching the “Tulunadu Siri Dompa” (a huge pandal) at Ratnavarma Heggade Memorial Stadium.

The motif of the convention, comprising a traditional vessel, paddy, a pair of tender coconuts, old coins dating back to Alupa dynasty’s period, beetle leaves and arecanut, was carried on a specially decorated palanquin. There were 45 teams in the procession. An elephant led the procession. Tableaus depicting King Krishnadevaraya’s Darbar Hall, soldiers, and Rani Abbakka added colour to the procession.

A foreigner, who was playing the saxophone, was among the participants in the procession.

There were Yakshagana “veshas”, a team of women dressed as tigers, Koraga bandset, Karangolu kunita, huli vesha, kangeelu dance, stilt walkers, gombeyata (puppet dance), a team of men and women beating chande, peacock dance, pilipanji kunita, a bhajan team, dudi kunita, aati kalenja, chennu kunita, mari bhoota and the like. A large number of people witnessed the procession by standing on either side of the roads and atop buildings.
