Members of the Dalit Vidyarthi Okkoota, University of Mysore, staged a protest outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday. They were demanding action against certain people belonging to the ‘upper castes’ who allegedly attacked Dalits for entering the Siddarameshwara temple at Hampapura village in H.D. Kote taluk on March 22.

M.G. Manoj Kumar, president of the okkoota, who led the protest, told The Hindu that people belonging to ‘upper castes’ had attacked the Dalits with lethal weapons. They had attacked a Dalit woman first and then four other Dalits who questioned it, Mr. Kumar said. The police had arrested three persons in this regard but they were not the culprits. If the culprits were not arrested within 10 days, the okkoota would intensify their protests, he said.

A memorandum was submitted at the Deputy Commissioner’s office later.
