BANGALORE: The police have arrested 786 persons and seized illicit arrack and liquor worth Rs. 3.95 crore during 796 raids conducted across the State (till July 16) since the ban on manufacture and sale of arrack came into force from July 1.

Director-General and Inspector-General of Police K.R. Srinivasan said in a press release on Friday that illicit arrack and liquor were seized from various storage points and during transportation. The police have confiscated 20 vehicles.

The highest number of raids, arrests and seizures were made in Belgaum district. During 106 raids, the Belgaum police arrested 125 people, booked 107 cases and seized illicit arrack/liquor worth Rs. 79 lakh. Three persons were arrested and arrack worth Rs. 4,150 was seized during three raids in Chitradurga district, the release said. In regard to encroachment of government lands in areas coming under the jurisdiction of Bangalore Rural police, no fresh complaints have been lodged by the Revenue Department in the past one month. Of the 408 cases registered, investigations have been completed and charge sheets filed in the courts in regard to 304 cases, the release said.

The police have arrested 1,134 persons in connection with these cases and efforts are on to trace 465 others. Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) Shankar Mahadev Bidari reviewed the progress of investigation on July 18, it added.
