Bangalore: A 36-year-old archak from Mandya district, who had allegedly duped several gullible people, was arrested by the Bangalore city police recently.
The Kumaraswamy Layout police raided a house in Ramanatha Mole village in Kirugavalu on January 27 and arrested the accused, identified as G. Siddalingaraju.
The police have recovered Rs. 1.5 lakh worth gold and pearl ornaments and an idol from the accused.
According to the police, he had escaped with these articles from the house of a retired employee from the city and had pledged them in Mandya.
The accused was an archak at Kalikambadevi temple in Mandya district.
He allegedly told people that he would alleviate their sufferings by conducting special pujas. About nine months ago, he met R. Shivakumar of Kumaraswamy Layout and promised him that he would alleviate his sufferings.
“After decorating an idol with the ornaments, the accused had performed a puja at Shivakumar’s house.
After the puja, he wrapped the idol with a sari and told Shivakumar not to unwrap the idol for the next eight months.
But the accused, before wrapping the idol with the sari, had removed all ornaments,” the police said.
The incident came to light on January 25, after Shivakumar unwrapped the idol. He filed a complaint against the archak. Investigation is going on.
Two persons committed suicide in as many incidents by hanging themselves from ceiling fans at their residences in the Gangammanagudi police station limits here on Saturday night.
Poovaiah (25) of Abbigere, who was suffering from chronic stomach pain, committed suicide, according to the police. He was a supervisor at a security firm.
In the other incident, Prasad (23) of Gangammanagudi hanged himself to death, the police said and added that the reason for his act is yet to be established.
Two chain snatching incidents were reported here on Saturday.
Two men on a motorcycle accosted a housewife near Lottegollahalli bus stand and snatched her chain around 9.30 p.m. The victim, Prabhavathi of Devinagar near Kannuramma Layout, has filed a complaint.
The second incident occurred in the Vidyaranyapur police station limits, in which Jayabalan of Ramachandrapur lost a chain to two men who stopped her on I Cross of BEL Layout 6th Main and sped away with it.
