Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president M.H. Ambareesh, who is facing threats from rebel candidate A.S. Ravindra Srikantaiah and dissidents in the Mandya District Congress Committee, visited residences of several Congress leaders here on Thursday to seek their support.

Mr. Ambareesh, who is contesting from the Mandya Assembly constituency, was greeted by a large crowd when he visited senior Congress leader Halahalli Ramalingaiah, former chairman of the State-owned Mysore Sugar Company Ltd. (Mysugar), to discuss about the election.

Mr. Ambareesh also started his campaign by visiting several areas in Keregodu hobli. The actor, popularly known as Mandyada Gandu, attracted large crowds during his campaign.

He told journalists that he was confident of winning the election. He claimed that Congress candidates would emerge victorious even in segments where rebels were contesting.

Mr. Srikantaiah, who has filed his nomination papers as an Independent from both Mandya and Srirangapatna constituencies, told journalists in Srirangapatna that he was confident of winning in both the segments.

According to sources close to Mr. Ravindra, he is planning to meet senior Congress leaders opposed to Mr. Ambareesh to seek their support in a bid to defeat the actor.
