Alva’s Virasat photography contest

Alva’s Vishwa Nudisiri Virasat has announced a national-level photography contest on the themes cultural India, rural India, landscapes of India and tourism spots of India. Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 5,000 will be given away as the first, second and third prize, respectively. There will be 10 consolation prizes, said a release. The photo can be sent online through www.pixel2life.in before November 15. Judges of the contest include Tippeswamy, S.R. Satyanarayan and Srinivas. During Virasat, an exhibition of 50 famous photographs, antique cameras among others will be held, added the release.

CPI(M) to hold Muslim convention on Sunday

Considering the seriousness of economic and social backwardness of the Muslim community, the Dakshina Kannada unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) will organise a convention for the legal rights of the community on October 27 at 2 p.m., at Shanthi Nilaya, Balmatta. Addressing presspersons recently, district secretary B. Madhav said the government had failed to uplift minorities and instead had exploited them for votes. Discussions would cover targeting and harassing of Muslims with terrorism-related charges; recommendations of the Ranganath Mishra Commission, among others. General Secretary of the party Prakash Karat will attend the convention, he said.

Ramachandra Rai

to get Samaga award

Senior Tenkutittu Yakshagana artiste Kolyoor Ramachandra Rai will be conferred the Malpe Shankarnarayan Samaga award for his contribution to the field for the past five decades. The Rajyotsava award-winner is best known for his portrayal of female characters in Yakshagana dramas, said a release. The award will be conferred to him on October 23 at the Mangalore Town Hall at 5 p.m. in a programme organised by the Kalkura Foundation, added the release.

The programme will also feature the Yakshagana episode “Kalinga Mardana – Panchajanya” by Nidle Govinda Bhat’s troupe

Power shutdown

Due to works on the 110 K.V. Kodavur and KUDCEMP feeder lines, there will not be power supply in certain areas of Udupi district on Tuesday between 9.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m., said a Mangalore Electricity Supply Company release. The affected areas are: Madhvanagar, Kodavoor, Kalmadi, harbour area, Adi Udupi, Malpe market and surrounding areas.

Management fest

In order to develop leadership skills among students of Management, the Srinivas School of Management, Mukka, will conduct a one-day Management fest “Mahayaan-13” on Thursday at the college premises. A release said, around 300 MBA students from Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra are expected to participate.
