SHIMOGA: Members of the district unit of the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samiti staged a dharna on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday pressing for their demands. The dharna was in response to the call given by the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samithi, Karnataka Rajya Dalit Vidyarthi Okkoota and Karnataka Rajya Dalit Mahila Okkoota for the State-wide demonstration.
Their demands include setting apart 23 per cent of the budgetary outlay for the development of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, nationalisation of mines, introduction of reservation for Dalits in private sector, enhancement in the scholarship proportionate to the price rise for SC/ST students, more funds for the Ganga Kalyan Yojane, extension of facilities to the SC/ST people through the single window system of the Social Welfare Department, issuance of ownership rights to the Dalit farmers engaged in “bagair hokum” cultivation, construction of buildings for the SC/ST pre- matric and post-matric hostels, and permanent BPL cards to the SC/ST people.
A memorandum was submitted to the district administration.
T.Manjunath Navule, K.V. Nagaraj Tirthahalli, and Dugoor Parameshwar Sagar led the demonstration.
