GULBARGA: Members of the All India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding the State Government to take up re-construction of Waghdhari-Ribbonpalli inter-State highway connecting Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka under the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) basis and improve the condition of the road.
B.R. Patil, AIPJD MLA, and CPI(M) State Secretariat member Maruti Manpade led the protest.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and submitted to Deputy Commissioner, the leaders accused the political leaders from the region of neglecting the region in the development, particularly the infrastructure development which was key for the economic development of a region.
The memorandum said although the inter-State highway has been included in private participation in the maintenance of the State highways and government investing tax payer's money in the development of the road, the private contractor, who has been entrusted the work for maintenance of the inter-State highway, has done little for improvement of the road.
