Government asked to fix support price for paddy scientifically
SHIMOGA: Farmers under the banner of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene staged a protest demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday demanding, among other things, support price for paddy.
The demonstrators complained about the distribution of sowing seeds and said that it would not improve unless the Agriculture Department and the State Seeds Corporation worked in tandem.
They said that as per the policy of Union and the State Governments, the Agriculture Department had to distribute seeds at 50 per cent discount last summer. But the department told farmers it would give discounts only on 25-kg bags.
Instead of distributing 25 kg bags, the department distributed 30-kg bags and collected full amount for 5 kg illegally, the farmers alleged. They accused the department of cheating farmers. The demonstrators urged authorities to conduct a probe and suspend the guilty officials.
They also alleged that the manager of the Shimoga unit of Seeds Corporation had bought paddy from middlemen for seed production. Because of this, fake seeds were being distributed to farmers.
Another complaint was that farmers were being charged more than the actual rate in the open market for agricultural implements and pesticides and seeds.
Even though paddy was grown widely in the district, there had been a steep fall in its price, the farmers said, adding that the existing support price was unscientific and the Government should fix it scientifically. They have also demanded Rs. 500 as incentive, andopening of purchase centres.
