Deputy Commissioner N.S. Prasanna Kumar has said that the medical officer at the taluk government hospital in Afzalpur, who failed to perform the mandatory medical tests on the 14-year-old gang-rape victim, had resigned.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Kumar said he visited the hospital on January 15, along with the Assistant Commissioner of Gulbarga subdivision, and questioned the hospital staff regarding the incident.

“Prima facie it has been established that the female officer, who was supposed to be in the headquarters, was not present on January 13 when the gang-rape allegedly took place at Karajagi village in Afzalpur taluk. She had submitted her resignation to the District Health and Family Welfare Officer Sajjan Shetty, before any disciplinary proceedings could be initiated against her,” Mr. Kumar said.

“We have not accepted the resignation, since the inquiry is still in its preliminary stages. The Assistant Commissioner of Gulbarga subdivision has been asked to inquire and submit a report to the district administration.”
