Parents of wards visit BEO’s office seeking information on availability of quota seats in private unaided schools

While admission process for the RTE quota seats in private unaided schools will begin on Tuesday, a large number of parents of wards seeking admission under the quota were seen seeking information about the quota seats in the offices of the Block Education Officers (BEO) on Monday.

Some BEOs claimed that the number of seats under the RTE quota had increased in their respective blocks as the number of private schools had gone up, and also some schools had increased the number of seats under the quota.

BEO South 1 (Bangalore) Kempaiah said that several parents had come to his office to get information about the available seats under the RTE quota. According to Mr. Kempaiah, the total number of seats under the RTE quota in his block for 2014-2015 is 4,366, up by 1,485 as compared to 2,881 seats in the academic year 2013-2014. He attributed the increase in seats under RTE quota in his block to the fact that 15 new schools had come up there.

In the BEO North 2 (Bangalore), the number of RTE quota seats for the academic year 2014-2015 stands at 1,842, 109 seats more than the figures of 2013-2014.

Sources in the Department of Public Instruction said thenumber of seats under the RTE quota in the State would be marginally more than 1.08 lakh seats last year. The source also said that while the seats in Bangalore may have increased because of the mushrooming of private schools, the same trend is unlikely in the rest of the State.

Children of parents with annual income below Rs. 1 lakh would be given first preference while allotting RTE quota seats and the next preference would be given for children of parents whose annual income is between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 3.5 lakh.

According to the department, parents can apply for admission under the quota between January 7 and February 8. By February 17, schools will have to send the applications to the BEOs and the admission process for students selected, as approved by the BEO’s office, will begin on March 3.
