Members of the Shimoga Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedikegala Okkoota staged a protest here on Thursday condemning the decision of the City Municipal Council to increase the water tariff rates.
The municipal council has revised the monthly tariff for domestic water connections from Rs. 60 to Rs. 120 each and for commercial connections from Rs. 120 to Rs. 240 each. The revised tariff came into effect from April 1.
Addressing the participants, general secretary of the vedike K.V. Vasanth Kumar said that the municipal council had decided to revise the tariff without consulting the civic organisations.
He said a 100 per cent hike in tariff would be a burden on common people. The municipal council had failed to fix a scientific tariff for the water usage. He urged the water-users to refrain from paying the revised tariff.
Organising secretary of the vedike Satish Kumar Shetty expressed displeasure over the announcement of the municipal council to collect a fee for solid waste disposal and maintenance of vacant sites.
The move to charge for these services was against the interests of common people, he said.
Functionaries of the vedike Ashok Yadav and Janameji Rao took part in the protest.
