Minister for Labour B.N. Bache Gowda on Sunday said that the Government would shortly launch a scheme to cover the drivers of the unorganised sector under an accident insurance scheme up to Rs. 2 lakh. This scheme would be applicable to drivers of autorickshaws, taxis, buses, lorries and other private vehicles.

Inaugurating the one-day Health Mela organised by the Employees' State Insurance Scheme on the occasion of its diamond jubilee at Hoskote, Mr. Gowda said that under the programme, families of drivers who die in road accidents will be provided a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh. Those who are injured severely will be given suitable compensation. Over the past three-and-a-half years, the State Government has spent Rs. 4,000 crore on the welfare of employees. There is no shortage of funds for schemes that provide medical facilities to the working class, he said.
