HASSAN: The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) on Thursday staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding better facilities at the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Backward Classes (BC) hostels in the district.
ABVP State Joint Secretary Rayasandra Ravi Kumar, City Secretary Thamme Gowda and joint secretaries Vasantha Kumar and Lakshmi Narayana said in a press release that visits by the the organisation to 170 hostels in the State, including some in the district, had revealed the poor conditions there.
They demanded an increase in the food allowance for each student from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000, and an increase in the number of rooms, bathrooms and toilets, according to the number of students, at each hostel. They also demanded that adequate security staff be posted at the hostels, and that separate rooms be made for a kitchen, library, stores and study purposes. Further, students' committees should be set at each hostel and pure drinking water provided.
