DAVANGERE: Minister for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation S.A. Ravindranath has instructed officials to compulsorily attend gram, taluk and zilla panchayat and Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) review meetings.

He has asked the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat to take disciplinary action against officials who do not attend these meetings.

The Minister, who is in charge of the district, instructed the CEO to issue show-cause notices to officials, including the Assistant Registrar of Cooperatives, for not attending the review meeting held here on Tuesday. He also called for a list of habitual absentees. The Minister pulled up the sericulture officer for not releasing grants to beneficiaries under various department schemes. He said the funds would lapse if it were not utilised in two days.

The Minister expressed concern over the inaction of the departments of Watershed Development, Agriculture and Horticulture for not educating farmers about natural farming and modern methods of farming. He asked officials to conduct a training programme for farmers at the hobli level.

Jayaramareddy, senior Assistant Horticulture Officer, said the department had been encouraging farmers to develop vermicompost units in their fields and adopt organic farming.


The department was giving subsidies to farmers to purchase bio-insecticides, he said. A number of women farmers had been identified for training in scientific cultivation of different flowers, fruits and vegetables.

Posts of doctors

The taluk health officer said that four posts of doctor were still vacant in the taluk.

Block Education Officer told the meeting that 42 schools in Davangere taluk were having a full-fledged kitchen to provide midday meals to schoolchildren while 69 schools have no kitchen.

He noted that kitchen for 33 schools was under construction and proposals for remaining schools had been sent to the Government. Midday meals to 20,360 children of Government schools and 29,091 children of aided schools were being given midday meal, he said.


Couples who marry outside their caste are finally being given motivation allowance of Rs. 12,000 under the Inter-caste Marriage Assistance Scheme.

When is the allowance given to these couples, the Minister asked an official from the Social Welfare Department.

He wanted to know whether the allowance was given to the couples at the time of marriage or after the birth of the first child.

Of the seven couples who had come to collect the allowance, five had come along with their children.
