One-and-a-half years ago Shashikala staged a dharna in front of the residence of Prakash Mantur of Bammigatti village urging him to marry her

HUBLI: A woman, who had staged a dharna for more than a fortnight in front of the residence of her lover and succeeded in marrying him, committed suicide on Sunday after one-and-a-half years of their marriage.

Shock

The death of Shashikala of Bammigatti village in Kalghatgi taluk came as a shock to many who had supported her when she went ahead with her agitation.

According to the police, Shashikala, who had a four-month-old baby boy, committed suicide by hanging herself in her house. One-and-a-half years ago Shashikala staged a dharna in front of the residence of Prakash Mantur of Bammigatti village urging him to marry her.

Resistance

She had stated that Prakash too loved her and even promised to marry her. But owing to resistance from his parents, he refused to marry her.

Members of several organisations had expressed their solidarity with Shashikala when she launched a dharna and even the elders of the village intervened to sort out the issue. After a fortnight of agitation, the parents of Prakash agreed to their marriage.

Request turned down

It is said that the relationship between Prakash and Shashikala was good till she started urging him to move out to another house with their baby. According to the police, Prakash turned down her request, and because of this, she took the extreme step.
