Are you a water sports enthusiast? Then, don’t miss this year’s Dasara adventure sports which will be held at two venues – the breathtaking backwaters of Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir (20 km from Mysore), and Varuna lake (about 10 km from Mysore).
Adventure buffs can test their mettle in the vast expanse of the Cauvery, courtesy of the General Thimmaiah National Adventure Academy (GETNAA), under the Department of Youth Services and Sports. GETNAA has been holding Dasara water sports since many years.
Speaking to The Hindu , GETNAA director M.S. Ramesh said parasailing will be the new attraction this year at the backwaters. The academy has also procured two new speedboats, and both venues will offer jet ski services. “Water sports in the KRS backwaters will be most thrilling. I am sure adventure buffs will have real fun,” he felt. The reservoir’s backwaters have entertained sports enthusiasts since 2005, he added.
Varuna lake is a relatively new addition; it was opened for water sports two years ago, before which those activities would take place at Kere Thonnur lake near Melkote.
Mr. Ramesh said the KRS backwaters were an ideal spot for different types of water sports. “I’m sure tourists will flock the site.” People must come to Hundawadi at the backwaters, about 3 km from Santhemala in Krishnaraja Sagar village, to access water sports.
“We are planning to arrange transportation for those who lack private transport from Santhemala. Transportation up to KRS either from Mysore or other places is not an issue,” he said. Water sports such as jet-skiing, banana rides, windsurfing, kayaking and speedboat rides have been planned at both venues.
Mr. Ramesh said parasailing could be enjoyed only in the backwaters, as it requires an area of 1 sq km. Terrestrial sports, including jumaring, tyrolean traverse and hot air ballon rides are among the other attractions to be enjoyed during the Dasara adventure sports.
Assistant Director of Youth Affairs K. Suresh told The Hindu that there was good demand for water sports and therefore they would be conducted at two venues. “As tourists flock Brindavan Gardens, I am sure they will visit the backwaters to enjoy water sports of their choice,” he felt.
Mr. Suresh said the venue for hot air balloon rides were yet to be decided. It may be either at Oval Grounds or at Lalitha Mahal Palace. A decision will be taken soon,
