Ranjith Rebello, a blind student was awarded with “Vishwa Manava” award at the 21st convocation of the Kuvempu University on Jnana Sahyadri campus in Shankaraghatta near here on Wednesday, for his brilliant performance in academic and cultural activities.
While most students stay away from sports and cultural activities fearing that it might affect their academic performance, Ranjith, being a visually challenged person, was able to strike a fine balance between the two.
Being a good orator, Ranjith has won many State-level debate competitions. He has finished on top in quiz and debate competitions at Kuvempu University inter-collegiate cultural competition this year and thereby qualified for south zone inter-university cultural competitions.
A student of fourth semester M.A. in Political Science, Ranjith has scored 72 per cent in the first three semesters and was hoping for a rank. Ranjith has won the State-level debate competition conducted by the Department of Public Instruction as a primary and high school student.
Ranjith told The Hindu that it was possible to maintain balance between academic and co-curricular activities. “One needs to become a voracious reader to secure success in quiz and debate competitions. The reading habit has helped me excel in academic activities. The academic as well as co-curricular activities are inter-related,” he said.
