Football referee and member of the Dakshina Kannada District Football Association Ismail Sabir has had a brisk month. During the month preceding the Independence Day, he was referee in nearly 60 of the 190 matches played in the Nehru Maidan as part of Independence Cup. Besides fasting as part of Ramadan, he had to run around a lot. “Sometimes, the referees failed to turn up. I had to do the job,” he said. The result: “I lost about six kg,” he said with pride.

Wrong number

Names that sound similar can be confusing. Many people have been calling up Planet cinema in Karkala after reading an advertisement in a local newspaper. They were surprised to find that the film advertised was not the one being screened. When a scribe did the same mistake, the person at the other end said: “It is not Platinum, but Planet, a (cinema) theatre in Karkala. You are not the only one to make this mistake. A few days ago a person had an argument with me over screening a movie that was different from what was mentioned in the newspaper. It took time for me to point out his mistake,” he said.
