PANAJI: "Fontainhas Festival of the Arts-2007," a five-day event aimed at creating awareness about the conservation of the heritage precincts of Fontainhas in the city, will be held here from Friday.

The precincts of Fontainhas were declared a conservation zone in 1974 and have since been preserved.

But it is slowly moving into a state of decay as the owners are finding it increasingly uneconomical to maintain the houses and find little prospects of economic benefit, according to Heta Pandit of Goa Heritage Action Group, the main organiser, on Monday.

The GHA is actively associated with conservation of heritage houses and locations.

The GHA has been organising the festival of the arts for the past four years in a bid to make the community aware of the rich heritage and seek their help in revitalising it.

The proceeds from the festival are shared with the people to help them preserve their heritage houses.

Local partcipation

"We seek to involve the local community in the efforts to revitalise the historic precincts and establish a partnership with public and private sectors to support this project," Ms. Pandit said.

Pop star Remo Fernandes will release his new album "MUCHACHA LATINA" at the festival, on Friday.
