Frozen Ground (English)
Director: Scott Walker Cast: Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, Vanessa Hudgens, Radha Mitchell, 50 Cent
It is not Oscar season so obviously Mr. Cage will not be driving around with his skull on fire. “The Frozen Ground” is a straight police procedural that you think might push an envelope but does not. What you see is what you get.
The only millennial twist to this tale based on the true story of a hunt for a serial killer in the mid-Eighties in Alaska is casting John Cusack as the psychopathic murderer, Robert Hansen.
Nicholas Cage plays Sgt Jack Halcombe the detective on Hansen’s tracks. He is helped by Cindy Paulson, a 17-year-old hooker who escaped from Hansen’s clutches. As a procedural, the film isn’t very gripping.
So it all boils down to performances. It is nice to see Cage return to dramatic roles.
His Halcombe inhabits somewhat the same space as Tom Welles (“8 MM”). John Cusack with his tragic eyes makes for an interesting serial killer — not Hopkins/Hannibal creepy though. Radha Mitchell as Halcombe’s wife and Vanessa Hudgens as Cindy provide able support.
Shot on location in Anchorage, Alaska, “The Frozen Ground” is a fairly-engrossing thriller.
